 I've been recommending Maggie's book to everyone who needs to do a business plan. It's a great book.
The Book "Starting a Business in Australia" Its not just for people starting out - I recommend it for those who have lost focus - so they can get back to basics.
When I have a friend or client that are just starting or thinking of start a business I tell that if they read Maggie’s book they be off to a better start than most people already in business today.
Imagine starting a business knowing the importance and having a firm business plan in place. I wish I had!

I launched my business some time ago, working from home as an Interior Stylist and Colour Consultant. My business was coasting along but I wasn't really satisfied sharing my office and computer with three children and a husband who is also self-employed. Also, I've recently been feeling that I needed to do something to increase my exposure and my clientele. So I started thinking about moving into an office space of my own.
I soon realized that before I committed to a lease and fit-out costs, I needed to sit down and do some real planning to work out whether or not the move was viable and whether it would be a good opportunity for my business to grow or just an additional expense. As it happened, the NSW Department of State and Regional Development was running it's "Small Business September" seminars, so I signed up for Maggie's "Business Planning Workshop".
Maggie spent the whole day working with each of the participants, putting together business plans specific to their individual needs, beginning with "where I am now" and "where I want to go" and moving on to "how I'm going to get there" including setting goals, working on strategies, market and resource analysis, marketing plans, operational plans and financial plans. It all sounds very complicated but Maggie has a gift for putting it all into plain English and is a wealth of information. By the end of the day, despite my brain-drain, I walked away feeling very happy and confident that I now had the tools I needed to take the next step on my business journey.
On top of all that, Maggie gave me lots of great tips about networking, increasing my profile and much more.
I would definitely recommend Maggie's workshop to anyone thinking of starting a small business or wanting to grow their business.
