Renting a car online should be simple.

  1. You pick a vehicle,
  2. compare a few prices,
  3. confirm the dates, and
  4. expect the number displayed on the screen to be reasonably close to what you will eventually pay.

Yet in practice, the experience can sometimes feel less straightforward. With companies like Thrifty Car Rental, some customers feel the initial price can be misleading once optional extras are factored in.

The starting point is usually an attractive headline rate. A customer searching for a compact car for a weekend getaway might see a daily price that appears lower than competing rental companies. Naturally, that figure grabs attention.

In a competitive market, the lowest price tends to win the click.

On the surface, there is nothing unusual about this. Car rental companies advertise base prices, and extras are typically optional. However, the gap between the advertised rate and the practical cost of renting the car can sometimes become larger than customers expect.

Reducing the Insurance Excess from $5,900!!

Many renters want to reduce the insurance excess. Rental vehicles often come with a high excess amount, meaning the driver could be responsible for thousands of dollars if the vehicle is damaged – even by others!

  • To avoid that risk, renters frequently choose to reduce the excess to zero or close to it. This type of coverage offers peace of mind and is one of the most commonly selected extras.
  • Another common request is adding a second driver. On longer journeys, sharing driving duties can make a trip far more comfortable. Couples, families, and business colleagues often expect that more than one person will drive the vehicle during the rental period.

The issue arises when the cost of these extras is not clearly presented during the online booking process. Instead, customers sometimes discover the exact price only when they arrive at the rental counter to collect the vehicle.

What began as a relatively low daily rate can quickly increase once insurance protection and additional drivers are added.

Importantly, customers are usually not required to pay those additional charges until pickup. That does give them the option to decline the extras.

What we found out

The timing can create pressure. When a traveller is standing at the counter, luggage in hand and plans already scheduled, walking away from the booking or declining coverage may not feel like a comfortable choice.

This can leave customers with the impression that the pricing was incomplete during the booking stage. Even if the extras are technically optional, the reality is that many renters consider them essential.

Thrifty Car Rental Blue Chip Portal - 20% discount which you can't actually use - YET

This was our experience to try to get the pricing information before we confirmed our booking:

  1. When we clicked the link on the confirmation email we still couldn’t add those extra items or find out the costs
  2. We joined their Blue Chip membership but no further discount was applied
  3. Two difference discounts were mentioned: 20% and 15% but none could be applied
  4. Once we joined the Thrifty Blue Chip Membership we couldn’t see the original booking we made (that makes sense because we did it as a guest
  5. We had to call to get pricing and found that:
    • Reduction in the Insurance Excess to $1,500 costs $36/day
    • Reduction in the Insurance Excess to zero costs $46/day
    • There was no additional cost for an extra driver AS LONG AS THAT EXTRA DRIVER LIVED AT THE SAME ADDRESS
    • We couldn’t use any Blue Chip Membership benefit discounts until we’d used Thrifty “a couple times” – but we couldn’t get an idea of how many times!
  6. Their cancellation policy was easy – just don’t confirm your booking or don’t show up at their counter at the Airport

How Booking Platforms Add to the Confusion

The situation becomes even more complicated when the booking is made through a third party platform such as Booking.com. These platforms are designed to help travellers compare prices across multiple rental companies, but they do not always make the extra costs any clearer.

When browsing car rentals through booking websites, users often see a list of vehicles with headline prices displayed prominently.

The layout encourages quick comparisons between companies and models.

Unfortunately, the details about optional extras such as excess reduction or additional drivers are often missing, vague, or buried deep within the booking information.

As a result, a customer may believe they are choosing the cheapest option, only to discover later that the real cost is higher once common extras are added. In many cases, the booking platform itself cannot confirm the exact price of these options because they are set by the rental company and finalised at the counter.

This disconnect between the booking platform and the rental provider can make the pricing feel less transparent. Customers may assume that the total price shown on the booking site reflects most of the real cost, when in reality it may only represent the base rental fee.

From a consumer perspective, this makes comparison shopping more difficult. Two vehicles might appear to have very different prices online, but once insurance coverage and additional driver fees are added, the difference between them could shrink or even disappear.

The Importance of Transparent Pricing

None of this means that rental companies or booking platforms are necessarily doing anything wrong. Optional extras are a normal part of the car hire industry, and customers do have the freedom to decline them. Insurance upgrades, extra drivers, GPS units, and child seats are all additional services that understandably come with a cost.

However, transparency plays a huge role in customer satisfaction. When travellers clearly understand the total cost before arriving at the rental desk, they can make more confident decisions and avoid unpleasant surprises.

For renters, the safest approach is to assume the base price may not represent the final cost. Checking the rental terms, asking about the insurance excess, and confirming the cost of additional drivers can help paint a clearer picture before the trip begins.

For booking platforms and rental companies alike, clearer presentation of optional costs could improve trust and make price comparisons more meaningful. In an industry built around travel planning, clarity is often just as valuable as a competitive rate.

At the end of the day, most people simply want a straightforward transaction: choose a car, know the price, collect the keys, and hit the road. When the numbers stay predictable from the moment of booking to the moment of pickup, the entire journey starts on a much smoother road.
